| Playing golf during the winter
months can be a problem for every greenkeeper and member of the
ground staff. Winter tees and winter greens can be introduced to
protect the summer tees and greens. Unfortunately the fairways have
to be played on to allow a game of golf. A recent survey showed,
that on an average golf course played during the winter, by an average
number of players, the total area of divots taken out was equal
to the size of a football pitch. This area has to be replaced in
the springtime at great cost in materials and labour by re-turfing
or divotmix. |
- EXACTLY AS IN SUMMER. We golfers love this but it results
in expensive ground maintenance due to divots that do not grow
back at low winter temperatures.
- PREFERRED LIES. This allows the player to move the ball to
a new better position and then take a divot.
- PEG THE BALL UP. Low handicappers push the peg in to ground
level and then take a divot whilst high handicappers tend to
miss the ball altogether.
- PICK UP THE BALL. From where it lands on the fairway, walk
to the nearest side and drop the ball on the edge of the fairway.
This is not a true game of golf and it either blocks your next
shot to the green or opens up the green. It is also time wasting.
The other disadvantage is that a concentration of divots are
taken out covering a 50 yard stretch down both sides of the
fairways around average driving distances.
- DIVOT NAILS. After taking a divot in the first place, these
nails have certain merits during the summer months when the
soil is warm enough for the roots of divots to grow back. However
they are of little use during the winter months when the ground
is too cold for the roots to grow back, or when the ground is
soft and wet and the divot disintegrates into a shower of tiny
pieces, usually over your face and clothes.
- WINTER FAIRWAY MATS. Allows the ball to be played from within
a few inches of where it landed on the fairway. THERE ARE NO
DIVOTS - NO GROUND MAINTENANCE and NO TIME WASTING. The playing
surface is consistent even if the ground is soft and wet or
frozen hard. THE COURSE CAN ALSO BE PLAYED APPROX 20% MORE USING
MATS DURING ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS WHEN IT WOULD NORMALLY
HAVE TO BE CLOSED WITHOUT MATS. THIS PROVIDES MORE INCOME FOR
THE CLUB BY WAY OF - VISITORS GREEN FEES - DRINKS AND FOOD -
PRO SHOP etc.
